New 14-Gate Concourse opens 100 Days ahead of Schedule at Reagan National Airport
The newly constructed concourse at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport adds 14 gates to the airport.
The New North Concourse at Reagan National Airport (DCA) is now open.
Turner successfully completed the concourse more than 100 days ahead of the contractually scheduled completion date.
“The Turner staff and trade partners worked tirelessly over the last few weeks to meet the airport’s soft opening schedule,” said Jeff Klinger, Vice President and Construction Executive. “It was fantastic team effort and the passion of the team is evident as you walk through the completed space.” Construction work on the airport extension began in 2018.
The new three-level concourse, features 14 aircraft gates with boarding bridges, a baggage handling system integrated to the main terminal, concession spaces, and grand open spaces for passengers arriving and departing. The main flooring is 45,000 square feet of custom poured terrazzo surface, which extends throughout the concourse and contains multiple colors and designs.
The airplane “ramp” encompasses new parking and taxiways for airplanes. This scope of work also includes extensions of the airplane fueling lines; de-icing lines; dedicated fire standpipe loop; and below grade utilities.
Construction of the concourse was challenged due to the existing soil conditions, which involved digging through 70 years of prior construction at an active airport, originally built on land reclaimed from the muddy banks of the Potomac River.
