Strabag expanding Subway in Canada
- Extension of Scarborough Subway (Line 2) in Toronto
- 7.8 km extension in northeast of the city
- Project schedule: 2021–2024
The Canadian subsidiary of publicly listed construction group Strabag has been awarded the contract for the Advance Tunnel Project for the Scarborough Subway Extension (Line 2) in Toronto. The approx. € 500 million (CAN 757 million) contract is being executed under a Design Build Finance model which will start in May and is expected to be completed by autumn 2024.
“This contract is one of several large infrastructure projects that we are implementing in Toronto at this time. We are pleased that our tunnelling expertise, which is currently also being applied to the construction of a pumping station and a railway tunnel, has helped to secure another order for us,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag SE.
Contract model insures best value for the province
Strabag was awarded the contract by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx through a public procurement process. Evaluation criteria included design and construction methodology, approach to project management and the collaborative behaviours of key individuals of the team.
The 7.8 km extension, which will run underground for its entire length, will connect the existing terminus at Kennedy Station with Sheppard Avenue/McCowan Road. The contract includes one launch shaft, one extraction shaft, five headwalls for future stations and 14 headwalls for future emergency evacuation buildings. The tunnelling works will be performed using a TBM with a diameter of 11.87 m.
