Kamoa Copper partners with DRC Government, Unicef, and other Stakeholders to Curb the Pandemic
Chairman of the Board at Kamoa Copper S.A., Ben Munanga is delighted to announce that Kamoa Copper has partnered with the DRC National Ministry of Health, as well as the Lualaba Provincial Health Minister, Mr Kabwit Ngoie Jules, UNICEF, the Lualaba Government Extended Vaccination Program, and other stakeholders in the fight against COVID-19 by administering vaccines at the Kamoa COVID-19 Hospital. The Kamoa COVID-19 Hospital continues to treat patients while construction progresses for the expansion and upgrade of the primary healthcare wing of the hospital, which is expected to be complete by the end of July 2021.
“Kamoa is working closely with national and provincial stakeholders to improve access to health care in the Lualaba province,” said Dr John Botomwito, Health Manager at Kamoa Copper S.A. Kamoa is one of 15 sites in the province where COVID-19 vaccination programs are being rolled-out to curb the spread of the virus.
“Kamoa’s highly-experienced doctors and nurses apply the latest medical treatments, supported by a world-leading emergency response team. As the pandemic evolves, the medical team at the Kamoa Hospital continues to review and update risk mitigation protocols, while ensuring that new medical advances are investigated and applied to protect the health and safety of employees and community members,” Dr Botomwito added.
Kamoa Copper S.A. secured 1,000 dosages of the AstraZeneca vaccine, mainly for use for Kamoa employees and contractors. The administration of the vaccine is free and voluntary, and the campaign will run for a month in May and June 2021. The second dose will be administered 8 to 12 weeks after the first and a certificate of vaccination completion will be issued to those who have received two doses.
“We are engaging with various partners to secure more vaccine dosages to extend our vaccination program and support the vaccination of DRC residents who live in our host communities,” Dr Botomwito commented.
The Democratic Republic of Congo launched its vaccination campaign in Kinshasa last month with an official ceremony and provided information on safety and the medical benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine – the main vaccine being rolled out in the country. Following a rigorous study, a team of Congolese experts has confirmed that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine far outweigh any risks.
After having his vaccine administered at the Kamoa COVID-19 Hospital on 24th May 2021, Mark Farren, Kamoa Copper’s CEO, emphasised: “Getting vaccinated is an important, voluntary gesture and poses more advantages than disadvantages. It is a gesture of solidarity and protection of not only oneself, but others.”
Kamoa Copper has focused on prevention, preparation, and mitigation in successfully managing risks associated with COVID-19. Large-scale testing, combined with focused preventative measures ensure that positive cases are quickly identified, isolated, and treated, with cross contamination kept to a minimum. Maintaining this high standard of risk management remains a daily focus at Kamoa Copper.
“Curbing the COVID-19 pandemic requires implementing all measures that are available. The successful administration of vaccinations locally and internationally will quickly and efficiently reduce the burden of the pandemic across the world,” Mr Farren continued.
The COVID-19 vaccination is an important measure in curbing the pandemic. It is a safe and effective measure that prevents infection and saves lives. Wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining social distance reduces the chances of being exposed to the virus, or spreading it to others. These measures alone, however, are not enough. Vaccines will strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms and death.
Individuals who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 should continue taking precautions in public spaces, such as wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, avoiding crowded spaces and poorly ventilated rooms, as well as washing and sanitising hands often.
