Salini Impregilo and Astaldi in Mobilinx Consortium awarded Construction Contract for Hurontario Light Rail Transit Project in Canada

Salini Impregilo and Astaldi, together with Canadian partners as members of the Mobilinx consortium, have been awarded a €917-million (about CAN$1.3-billion) civil construction contract by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx for the Hurontario LRT (HuLRT). The complete Mobilinx team, which also consists of John Laing, Hitachi, Amico, Bot and Transdev, will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the HuLRT for a 30-year term.

The HuLRT is an 18-kilometre, 19-stop light rail transit system that runs along Hurontario Street from Port Credit in Mississauga to the Brampton Gateway Terminal. The HuLRT will operate in a separated guideway with traffic priority throughout most of the corridor.

With a 42% stake in the joint-venture for the civil construction work (€385 million), Salini Impregilo will lead the engineering, procurement and construction of the civil works. Astaldi has a 28% stake (€257 million).

“We are proud to have been chosen to work on this strategic project of sustainable mobility, another one that we have won together with Astaldi, which further underlines the synergies between our companies,” said Pietro Salini, Chief Executive of Salini Impregilo. “We are pleased to return to Canada with our global expertise to help the province of Ontario expand its public transport network to benefit residents and commuters alike. The Hurontario LRT project in Ontario is the latest in our drive to expand in North America, where the United States represents our single biggest market by revenue. In the United States, we are also working on the first high-speed railway, a design-build project between Dallas and Houston.”

The HuLRT project marks the return of Salini Impregilo to Canada since its last project three decades ago. Its most notable contributions to infrastructure development in Canada include a metro line in Montreal and part of the James Bay hydroelectric project.

Astaldi has been present in Canada since 2012, through its wholly owned company Astaldi Canada Inc. based in Montreal, Quebec, with projects in the hydro, urban transport, and civil building sectors.

Today marks the first time that Salini Impregilo and Astaldi win a contract together following the launch of Progetto Italia, a plan to consolidate the construction sector in Italy. Progetto Italia involves Salini Impregilo taking control of Astaldi to create a larger group with the scale to compete better in international markets.

With a combined track record of over 11,600 kilometres of rail and over 650 kilometres of metro lines, Salini Impregilo and Astaldi are a major contributor to the development of urban and extra-urban mobility, with projects that support efforts to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution by offering safe, efficient and environmentally friendly public transport services.

As a leader in rail and metro infrastructure, Salini Impregilo is helping cities throughout the world to improve the quality of life in their communities. In Copenhagen, it recently inaugurated the Cityringen, a major metro line that encircles the historic centre. In Perth, it is working on the Forresfield-Airport Link, a light rail transit line that will connect the suburbs with the airport and the city centre. In the United States, it is conducting the early works on the massive high-speed rail project in Texas.

Astaldi’s main sector of activity is transport, and it is working on the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel, which is the longest underground railway line under construction in the world. It is also working on the most important railway upgrade projects in Romania, Poland, Algeria and Sweden.
