Mining Technology Suppliers need common Standards

It's a question that can be asked of any industry: what will the sector look like in the years to come? How will demands change, skills evolve and the technologies used advance? And what impact will that have? For the global resources industry – and particularly mining – that question has some different answers.

Salini: Safety and Sustainability Key Elements in Construction of Milan's M4 Metro Line in Italy

“Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Barbara at every work site of Milan’s new M4 metro line after having achieved a record: in the past month, we were able to excavate a kilometre under the city centre, using a removal system for materials that kept its impact on street life to a minimum. To work on a project this big, with 56 work sites, some located in the downtown area, is not easy. And I thank you for this, for the enormous work you have done in a country where public works are undertaken with great difficulty. The M4, which will transport up to 86 million people a year, is one of the most important projects in sustainable mobility in Europe.

Fugro performs Load-testing on Germany’s longest rotary bored Piles for Hamburg’s Elbtower

Fugro has completed a successful load-testing programme on Germany’s longest rotary bored piles as part of the foundation design verification for the planned Elbtower construction in Hamburg, Germany.

On completion, the 244 m high Elbtower will be the third tallest skyscraper in Germany and forms part of a 157-hectare megaproject to redevelop former harbour and industrial areas in the HafenCity district of Hamburg.

Located on low load-bearing ground near the Elbe river, the Elbtower’s foundations will rest on long piles to transfer the load to a deep load-bearing soil layer and prevent long-term settlement. Deep foundation contractor Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH constructed four bored test piles up to 111.4 m long and 1,850 mm in diameter, and Fugro provided unique load-testing and measurement technology for the pile-testing programme. The advantage of Fugro’s in situ load testing, especially on piles of this size and bearing capacity, is that clients can verify and potentially optimise their foundation design without the need for costly and time-consuming installation of the reaction piles used in conventional testing.

In a world first, Fugro also fitted the longest-ever thermal integrity tests strings in the rotary bored piles, which had concreted lengths of over 111 m, to verify the structural integrity of the constructed sections.

Hauke Sychla, Fugro’s Project Manager: “The bi-directional load-testing results and comprehensive pile instrumentation provided by Fugro will help our client and the design firm to understand the ground’s deformation behaviour and the piles’ bearing capacities to design a safe and cost-effective foundation design for the Elbtower.”

Environmental Social Governance (ESG) – the Future in MiningEnvironmental Social Governance (ESG) – the Future in Mining

A raw materials turnaround in the sense of uniformly higher international standards in terms of environmental protection, social and technological development (Environmental Social Governance) (ESG) will become the future guideline in mining. The most urgent task for the coming years is to implement both issues, raw material security and ESG conformity, at the same time. This requires above all investments in the exploration, production, processing and refining of raw materials. In addition, technical innovations are needed to expand existing mining capacities and make them as ESG-compliant as possible. At bauma 2022, technological solutions and specialist expertise will be presented....
