Mining Technology Suppliers need common Standards
It's a question that can be asked of any industry: what will the sector look like in the years to come? How will demands change, skills evolve and the technologies used advance? And what impact will that have? For the global resources industry – and particularly mining – that question has some different answers.

Salini: Safety and Sustainability Key Elements in Construction of Milan's M4 Metro Line in Italy
“Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Barbara at every work site of Milan’s new M4 metro line after having achieved a record: in the past month, we were able to excavate a kilometre under the city centre, using a removal system for materials that kept its impact on street life to a minimum. To work on a project this big, with 56 work sites, some located in the downtown area, is not easy. And I thank you for this, for the enormous work you have done in a country where public works are undertaken with great difficulty. The M4, which will transport up to 86 million people a year, is one of the most important projects in sustainable mobility in Europe.

Minister welcomes Student Ambassadors
The latest crop of Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) ambassadors from across the State were today presented with their credentials by the Hon Shannon Fentiman MP, Minister for Employment & Small Business and Minister for Training & Skills Development.
The students were selected from the 75 QMEA schools all over Queensland and were among 100 people to attend the QMEA Year in Review breakfast in Brisbane hosted by BHP.
“QMEA students have a head start when it comes to vying for the highly skilled and well-paying careers available in our resources sector,” said Ian Macfarlane Chief Executive of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC). The latest data provided by the Queensland Government shows that almost 22 percent of QMEA students who finished school last year began studies in engineering and related technologies this year, compared with 15 percent of students in non-QMEA schools,” he said. And, 5.2 percent of QMEA students entered the mining field compared with 0.2 percent of non-QMEA students. Most pleasingly, 4 percent of indigenous students in QMEA schools entered mining careers, compared with just 1 percent of non-QMEA indigenous students. While 13 percent of QMEA female students go onto apprenticeships in mining compared with 2 percent of non-QMEA. It’s clear that the sizeable investment from our member companies, along with that of the Queensland Government is paying dividends. It comes at a time when we are facing critical shortages of skilled people, combined with a lack of knowledge among students of careers in resources. A recent Minerals Council of Australia survey showed that 59 percent of students had no knowledge of the huge variety of careers we have in the resources sector.”
The QMEA Ambassadors have had a busy schedule touring resources sector hot spots in Brisbane, including BMA’s Integrated Remote Operations Centre (IROC).
Head of IROC Dan Kadziela said BMA was delighted to host the breakfast, and have the opportunity to show the students how technology is changing the face of mining.
“It was great to be able to demonstrate how technology is making our industry safer and more accessible to a wider workforce, while creating new opportunities and career pathways,” he said.
Jellinbah Group, Hastings Deering and Civeo also sponsored the event and had representatives on hand who mingled with the ambassadors.
The QMEA is a partnership between the QRC and the Queensland Government under its Gateway to Industry Schools program.
QRC is the peak representative body for Queensland ‘s resource sector. The Queensland resources sector provides one in every five dollars in the Queensland economy, sustains one in seven Queensland jobs, and supports more than 14,400 businesses and community organisations across the state, all from 0.1 percent of Queensland’s land mass.
