Salini: Safety and Sustainability Key Elements in Construction of Milan's M4 Metro Line in Italy

“Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Barbara at every work site of Milan’s new M4 metro line after having achieved a record: in the past month, we were able to excavate a kilometre under the city centre, using a removal system for materials that kept its impact on street life to a minimum. To work on a project this big, with 56 work sites, some located in the downtown area, is not easy. And I thank you for this, for the enormous work you have done in a country where public works are undertaken with great difficulty. The M4, which will transport up to 86 million people a year, is one of the most important projects in sustainable mobility in Europe.

It is also an example of Salini Impregilo’s leadership in terms of safety. We do not cut corners on safety. What you do every day is hard work, and every day you have to do it in the full knowledge that safety depends on each and every one of you - from the planning phase of a project to its execution. It is done with a sense of responsibility on the part of everyone: from managers to team leaders to workers. Having the expertise to do the job is not enough: our projects must be done safely as well as at the highest level of quality. Although Italian construction companies like Salini Impregilo and Astaldi are involved in some of the biggest projects in the world, there is a need today for more scale at the international level. It is for this reason that we launched Progetto Italia, which has already started bringing together some of the most important companies of the sector to compete against big international players. It is also working to restart the sector and create employment in Italy.”

These were the words given by Pietro Salini, Chief Executive of Salini Impregilo, on the occasion of the Feast Day of the patron saint of miners and other workers involved in the excavation of tunnels. It was celebrated at Manufatto Argonne and the base camp of the M4 line. Commissioned by the city, a mixed group is building the line and will manage it once it is completed. The group’s shareholders include the city and a private team led by Salini Impregilo and Astaldi.

One year before the opening of the first section of the line between Linate airport and the Forlanini FS train station, the M4 will connect the heart of Milan to the Linate city airport in 12 minutes of travel. About 1,500 people are working on the line, 500 of whom are direct employees of the Metro Blu consortium. Built entirely underground for nearly 15 kilometres, the line runs along an east-southwest axis, passing through the historic centre. There will be two interchanges with existing lines – M1 at San Babila station and M2 at Sant’Ambrogio. There will also be three interchanges with commuter rail stations Forlanini FS, Dateo and San Cristoforo FS. All of these connections will expand the city’s network of public transport that will help improve the environment by taking some 16 million vehicles off the streets every year and reducing CO2 emissions by 54,000 tonnes a year.
