Tensar T-value Method launched at ICE, London
Attendees at our Tensar Academy What if… workshop at the Institution of Civil Engineers on 19 September heard how project trials of the new Tensar T-value method have cut working platform costs by up to 30%.
In the keynote lecture, Tensar Senior Application Technology Manager Dr Andrew Lees, who led development of the new method, explained how it enabled an accurate assessment of the effect of stabilising geogrids on working platform bearing capacity.
Lees explained how, for the first first time, the full benefits of stabilising geogrids could be incorporated consistently in designs for a range of platform materials, in different ground conditions, allowing engineers to compare designs with, or without, geogrid. The new approach has already been used in the UK and Canada, where it was shown to cut the cost of constructing working platforms by up to 30%.
The methodology was developed using finite element analysis of aggregate layers stabilised with geogrid. Researchers then carried out 500 large scale triaxial tests of different combinations of aggregate and geogrid, demonstrating that the stabilisation effect of geogrid could be measured.
Ground Engineering magazine has published a report of the workshop. A paper on the Tensar T-value method, by Andrew Lees and Tensar Area Civil Engineer Peter Matthias, is available on GE’s technical paper database and is published in the November 2019 issue.

Zonguldak hard coal mining doubles output and modernises plant technology
A core region of hard coal extraction and energy production with a 200-year mining tradition: This brief description applies to the Ruhr region, but also to Turkey with numerous state and private hard coal mines. But there is also a considerable difference: while coal mining in the Ruhr region has been history for a year, it has excellent prospects in Turkey. This is because the considerable regional deposits are to be mined more intensively than before. This is the aim of Turkey's energy development plan, which aims to reduce its dependence on energy imports.
