New President of the European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC)

Prof. Thomas Bauer, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Bauer AG and member of the executive committee of the Hauptverband der Deutschen Bauindustrie e.V. (Federation of the German Construction Industry) was unanimously selected as the President of the European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC) at the annual general meeting on May 22, 2020.

He succeeds Norwegian Kjetil Tonning and will hold the office of President of the European Construction Industry Federation for two years, until summer 2022. “I am honored to accept this position at such a difficult time for Europe,” says Thomas Bauer. He has been a member of the FIEC executive committee since 2017, managing economic & legal affairs. From 2011 to 2016 he was President of the Hauptverband der Deutschen Bauindustrie (Federation of the German Construction Industry).

FIEC currently has 32 member associations in 28 European countries and, as the European umbrella organization, represents the interests of the European construction industry to EU institutions (Commission, Council and Parliament). In addition to this, FIEC represents the employer side in European sectoral social dialogue for the construction industry. In 2019, construction volumes in the 28 member states of the European Union amounted to over 1.4 trillion euros, and almost 15 million people were employed in around 3.3 million construction companies throughout Europe.

Thomas Bauer enters office at a challenging time. The Covid-19 pandemic is having a serious impact on the European construction sector – although the effects vary between the individual EU member states. While there have so far only been isolated construction site closures in Germany and northern Europe, construction activity in southern Europe has fallen by around 60 to 70% – an unprecedented slump. Uncertainty about the implementation of planned investments by the industry, governments and private households will accompany the construction sector for the remainder of the year.

“Against this backdrop, as the new FIEC President I will work to ensure that the reconstruction plan for EU economies damaged by the coronavirus pandemic, which was recently proposed by the EU states and governments, also includes significant investment in European infrastructure as well as in energy-efficient renovation of existing buildings,” explained Thomas Bauer. In addition to this, FIEC calls for a commitment by EU institutions to ensure that the free movement of workers and the freedom to provide services throughout the European Union is restored as soon as possible.
