Metso Outotec acquires Davies Wear Plate Systems

Metso Outotec has closed today the acquisition of the Australia-based fastener and wear monitoring technology provider Davies Wear Plate Systems, extending its wear lining portfolio and capabilities.

The acquired technology includes fasteners with a unique locking mechanism that does not require traditional studs and nuts and thus enables faster and safer maintenance work. Davies Wear Plate Systems’ portfolio also includes wear monitoring technology, which provides a real-time forecast of wear and expected liner change-out timing. The monitoring solution can be fitted to any metallic or ceramic liner, independent of attachment systems.

POWTECH 2020 Special Edition cancelled

NürnbergMesse has decided not to hold the POWTECH 2020 Special Edition that was planned for September this year. With this decision the trade fair organisers are addressing the reservations of many exhibitors and industry players about having an on-site event. Recently, exhibitors have been particularly hesitant in view of the partly unforeseeable effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the ability to travel and the economic situation of the various sectors involved. The next POWTECH will therefore take place in Nuremberg on the usual scale from 26 to 28 April 2022. The leading trade fair for the processing, analysis and handling of powder and bulk solids will be held in combination with the PARTEC Congress.

QRC: COVID doesn’t stop students being creative with coding

About 50 north Queensland students in years three to six have embarked on a creative coding challenge, which has gone online due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Renowned digital technology educator Dr Damien Kee is delivering customised tutorial videos, which utilise Scratch Programming, to students in the Collinsville region who want to extend their programming skills or start exploring the digital world.

Throughout term three, students will be tested with three projects in the challenge, which is supported by Thiess and run by the Queensland Minerals and energy Academy (QMEA).

They will develop an animation to demonstrate processes used in Thiess’ mining operations.

And, they will create a quiz and a game centred on Thiess’ local operations, and the wider resources sector.

Thiess Mining General Manager – Queensland, Vikesh Magan said the Thiess team was proud to support the QMEA program by providing information about mining, engineering techniques and scenarios.

“Mining is dynamic. For more than 80 years, Thiess has operated in diverse commodities, geologies, and environments,” Vikesh said.

“We’re continually learning and improving and applying digital advances to transform how we work.

“It’s a privilege to work with the QMEA and help develop our next generation of engineers through this challenge.”

As the term progresses, QMEA and Thiess will showcase student projects that have gone over and above the basic standards.

“Creative ideas and lateral thinkers will do well in this challenge,” said Scottsville State School Principal Vanessa Boal.

“Scottsville won the Thiess STEM Proud Robotics Competition in 2019, so we are expecting the students do very well in the challenge,” she said.

The grand final winners will be invited to show off their projects when Thiess representatives visit each school.

  • DATE: Kicks off week 2 of Term 3 (Wed 22 July)
  • SCHOOL(S): Collinsville SS, Scottsville SS and St Johns Bosco
  • LOCATION(S): Collinsville region, run virtually

About QRC and QMEA

The Queensland resources sector provides one in every five dollars in the Queensland economy, sustains one in seven Queensland jobs, and supports more than 14,400 businesses and community organisations across the state, all from 0.1 percent of Queensland’s land mass.

The QMEA is a partnership between the QRC and the Queensland Government under its Gateway to Industry Schools program. It has 75 schools throughout Queensland.
