Strabag Rail upgrading Rail Network in eastern Germany for Deutsche Bahn

  • Two large DB Netz AG orders on the railway lines south of Berlin and between Leipzig and Dresden
  • Project Südkreuz (a)–Blankenfelde (Berlin–Dresden Railway / VP 5) in consortium with Strabag AG also includes the connection to the new BER airport
  • Project Zeithain (VDE 9) comprises the fundamental renewal of the Bogendreieck–Leckwitz rail section in a consortium with Hentschke Bau GmbH

Strabag SE has been awarded two major railway construction contracts in eastern Germany from DB Netz AG. Strabag Rail GmbH, working in a consortium with Strabag AG, has been commissioned to upgrade the railway line between the Berlin/Brandenburg border and the Berlin outer ring for long-distance trains (Berlin–Dresden Railway / VP 5). The project also includes the connection of the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) to the long-distance network of Deutsche Bahn. The contract has a volume of around € 105 million. Construction will begin in August 2020, with completion of the main construction works scheduled for January 2025.

Strabag Rail will also be leading a consortium with Hentschke Bau GmbH to upgrade the section between Zeithain and Leckwitz on the Leipzig–Dresden railway line for long-distance train service (Project Zeithain / VDE 9). This contract has a volume of around € 87 million. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2025 after about five years (61 months) of construction. Strabag Rail GmbH will carry out both orders with teams from its Business Unit East.

“We are very happy about the confidence placed in our railway construction expertise and are delighted to be playing a key role in the upgrade of Germany’s railway infrastructure with two large projects at once. These are important steps on the way to further increasing the competitiveness of rail travel as an environmentally friendly and fast means of transport,” explained Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag SE.

New tracks for high-speed ICE connection to BER airport

DB Netz AG is having the 16 km section in the south of Berlin from Berliner Südkreuz to Blankenfelde (Berlin–Dresden railway) upgraded to handle modern local, regional and long-distance trains, among other things to provide a high-speed ICE link from the centre of Berlin to the BER airport. This section of the Berlin–Dresden line is currently only open to S-Bahn commuter service and diesel freight trains. The contract (VP 5) awarded to the consortium consisting of Strabag Rail and Strabag Subdivision North-East includes the construction of the approximately three-kilometre long track section between the Berlin/Brandenburg border and the Berlin outer ring as well as the construction of the Mahlow Curve to link the BER airport to the Berlin–Dresden Railway. As part of the project, the STRABAG team will construct two mainline tracks including switches, overhead lines and safety technology, relocate the existing S-Bahn track and build noise protection walls, among other things. Four overpasses and a passenger tunnel will also be built to replace the existing level crossings, along with a new crossing structure for the grade-separated extension of the Mahlow Curve.

The approx. 10 km double-track section of rail between Zeithain and Leckwitz is being completely renovated and rebuilt as part of the ongoing upgrade of the Leipzig–Dresden railway line to a high-speed link. The Zeithain project (VDE 9) comprises not only the new construction of the track system including ground engineering works, drainage and underground cables, but also the complete renewal of the signalling and signal box technology, the installation of new overhead contact lines and the new construction or renovation of the Glaubitz and Nünchritz stops (platforms and park-and-ride facilities). The modification of four bridge structures along the line, the construction of new overpasses and culverts, and the erection of noise barriers with a total area of 30,000 m² also form part of the contract.

Nexa Resources improves Safety and Ore Recovery with first WebGen blast


By applying the unique features of Orica’s fully wireless initiation system, WebGen™, Nexa Vazante (Nexa Resources) significantly reduced ore dilution from 27% to 20%, resulting in a net benefit of US$1.59 million.

The single blast event achieved a smaller hydraulic radius by keeping the pillar during the stope extraction which in turn resulted in a reduced cycle time to 20 days, down 70% from an expected 90 days by maintaining two mucking access points to the main stope, only possible due to the wireless capability of WebGen™. The unique blasting approach dramatically improved safety by pre-loading the pillar with WebGen™, minimising the exposure of personnel and removing the need to re-enter the area.

Nexa Vazante Chief Mining Engineer Mateus Ribeiro said: “Thanks to this technology and partnership, we recovered an island rib pillar, which is a pillar kept in the open stope for dilution control. After all the ore from the block was extracted and the pillar had completed its requirement, the pre-loaded holes were successfully initiated remotely.

“We went through a series of improvements in the evolution of blasting technology with Orica, from the first detonators until nowadays using 100% wireless detonators. The blast happened two levels below us, so we are 400m away, above the shot. All encoded signals were sent through the rock with the safety protocols to fire the blast being followed.
Nexa Vazante, a zinc and lead mine owned by Nexa Resources, is located in northwest Minas Gerais, Brazil. Using the Vertical Retreat Mining (VRM) and Long Hole Open Stope as the main methods for ore extraction, the mine has traditionally deployed wired initiators in the recovery of ore, typically yielding around 60% ore recovery in the pillars. The application of wired initiators also required increased resources and time in the mine.

In 2019, Orica proposed the implementation of WebGen™ wireless initiating technology at Vazante to support the team in mitigating the operational and safety challenges of the mine. Enabled by the wireless technology of WebGen™, ore within the pillars can be recovered through pre-loading without the need to return to the open stope. With the introduction of WebGen™, the mine was able to gain time in the sequencing of the blast and extract ore previously inaccessible while improving its operating productivity.

Orica’s Latin America Wireless and Electronic Blasting Systems Specialist, Wesley Andrade said: “The Nexa Vazante crew and our team conducted extensive site signal surveying and applied best practices to ensure the drill pattern in the pillar was accurately loaded with WebGen™ 100 units, encoded and positioned as planned. 

“This achievement in recovering a pillar through wireless initiation while protecting people from hazards is made possible only by the strong partnership between Nexa Vazante and Orica. We are thrilled to have Nexa Vazante successfully implement wireless blasting with our WebGen initiating system.”

The pillar pre-loaded with the wireless initiators were safely fired after 33 days of sleep time, with several ore blasts taking place alongside the pre-loaded pillar. A second application is currently being studied to allow pre-loading of an entire stope, which will reduce operational risk, number of cycles and increase ore production and therefore profitability for Nexa Vazante.

Improved Safety, Efficiency, and a lower environmental Impact – ambitious EU Project combines Research and Business to reshape Europe’s Mining Industry

The European Commission has granted EUR 8.4 million to a three-year H2020 project that develops an artificial intelligence platform for the monitoring and analysis of mine sites across Europe. The project, called Goldeneye, will develop solutions that improve safety, environmental impact and profitability of mines by creating a platform that combines earth observation technologies with on-site sensing.

European production and infrastructure depend on a supply of high-quality raw materials. Ensuring that the needed materials are produced responsibly in European mines guarantees sustainable supply and prevents European countries from becoming dependent upon imports from global markets. To support the development of the European mining industry through technological solutions, the Goldeneye platform integrates information from satellite produced Earth Observation Data (EOD), drone overflight sensors and on-site recorded data. 

The project is coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the consortium consist of 16 European companies and research partners. The consortium works together in platform development and in bringing together the work of sensing experts, solution providers, and European mines.

Combining data to minimize risks

The Goldeneye project will implement a unique combination of remote sensing and positioning technologies with data analytics and machine-learning algorithms. The platform will allow satellites, drones and in-situ sensors to collect high-resolution data of the entire mine, which can then be processed and converted into actionable intelligence that allows more efficient exploration, extraction and closure.

“With Goldeneye, we are not solving just one problem. Our goal is to bring together different technologies in a platform that can offer innovative solutions to both businesses and governments and have a positive effect on the mining industry as a whole,” says the project coordinator Marko Paavola from VTT. 

The project will also improve the analysis of the mine site mineralogy using drone integrated geophysical sensors as well as innovative proximity sensors including active hyperspectral sensing and time resolved Raman spectroscopy. The platform integrates this information to the data gained from the imagery and radars of available satellites including Copernicus and Sentinel systems as well as global satellites.

Applications for every stage of the lifecycle

The use cases of the Goldeneye platform address the different phases of the mine’s life cycle from exploration to closure and post-closure. The applications developed in the project include mineral detection, safety monitoring, operational management, geo-hazard monitoring, and environmental monitoring. For example, in the safety monitoring application the aim is to improve the safety of the mines by monitoring the mining sites for sudden slope and ground changes as well as analysing the environment of the mines to detect any mining water leakages from their indirect influence to the surrounding nature. 

Five pilot sites across Europe

During the project, the Goldeneye platform will be piloted on five mining sites across Europe. Two pilot sites, Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland and Trepča Mines Complex in Kosovo will focus on the study of the environmental impact and stability of the mines. The Pyhäsalmi mine will also be used as a test site for indoor GNSS location positioning and turn-by-turn navigation trials. Accurate location improves the safety of the underground mines as it enables better tracking of the mining activities

Two field trial sites, Erzgebirge district in Germany and Panagyurishte district in Bulgaria, will focus on mineralogical mapping. The geophysical and proximity sensors will be used to calibrate satellite information and teach AI algorithms. The aim is to develop mineral exploration with higher resolution imaging and improved mapping of valuable mineral deposits.

The fifth site in the Roşia Poieni district in Romania aims to improve mineral predictions with combined satellite imagery and drone-produced data. The aim is to improve profitability, and support the mining community of the area.

Furthermore, the project will develop a mineralogical sensor solution for the ore drilling integrating Sandvik drilling machines with time-gated Raman sensors. This will improve the mineral extraction efficiency and support the profitability of the mines.
