Strabag awarded two major Contracts for Flood Protection Dams in Oman
- Construction of two flood protection dams in the Muscat region
- Contract value of about € 165 million
Strabag, the publicly listed European-based construction group, has been awarded two major contracts in the Sultanate of Oman. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has commissioned the corporate subsidiary Strabag Oman LLC to build two flood protection dams in the capital region of Muscat. The contract has a value of € 165 million. Construction on both projects will start in November.
“Strabag has been active in Oman since 1970 and has already implemented numerous large-scale projects in the country in the fields of road, bridge and dam construction. Most recently, Strabag realised the Salalah Dam as well as the Al Amerat Heights and Wilayat Sur flood protection projects,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag SE.
Protection of university district and urban development area
The Al Jafnayn Dam being built next to Sultan Qaboos University in Seeb will help protect the infrastructure of the university district and the residential areas located in the lower reaches from flooding. The U-shaped rockfill dam will be 6,500 m long and up to 20 m high. The dam structure includes two concrete spillways, two intake towers with bottom outlets and a geotechnical monitoring system.
The Al Jufainah Dam is being built near the Al Amerat–Quriyat highway in a region of rapidly growing neighbourhoods that have been repeatedly hit by flooding in the past. The reservoir will be formed by two rockfill dams with a total length of approximately 2.4 km and five smaller saddle dams. The works also include concrete structures including three spillways and a spillway tower with bottom outlet as well as various flood protection walls. The construction works will take 32 months (Al Jafnayn Dam) and 29 months (Al Jufainah Dam).
