BAUER Group receives Order for fourth Section of Dike Remediation Project in Jordan

As part of a large dike remediation project at the Dead Sea, BAUER International FZE – a company in the BAUER Group – has successfully constructed cut-off walls on behalf of the Arab Potash Company (APC) since 2018. Recently, Bauer was commissioned with the fourth remediation section amounting to roughly EUR 41 million. This increases the total contract value to roughly EUR 160 million.

The Dead Sea is rich in potash, which is an essential component of fertilizers. The Arab Potash Company utilizes this natural occurrence of salt as the basis for the production of carnallite. The mineral is extracted from multiple earth basins extending over an area of 112 km2 on the southern end of the Dead Sea into which salt water is pumped and subsequently evaporates, leaving behind the sought-after raw material. However, the dikes surrounding the basins have become permeable over time and must now be refurbished.

In 2018, Bauer was commissioned with the first remediation section and constructed roughly 112,000 m2 of cut-off wall over a distance of 4.2 km at one of the main dikes. Despite various obstacles relating to logistics, climate and geology – and despite significant restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic – the works were successfully completed before the planned deadline in October 2020.

“With more than 60 years of experience in the field of specialist foundation engineering, Bauer has already carried out numerous dam rehabilitation, remediation and sealing projects around the world”, says Michael Stomberg, CEO of BAUER Aktiengesellschaft. “Nevertheless, this project has a special significance for us, and not just because of its location approximately 400 m below mean sea level.” Apart from the efforts of the Bauer team on site, a highly cooperative relationship with the owner and considerable support from the owner during the pandemic-related restrictions proved to be crucial factors for success. “This order extension confirms the trust that has been placed in us, and we look forward to continuing our successful and cooperative partnership in the future.”

About Bauer

The BAUER Group is a leading provider of services, equipment and products related to ground and groundwater. With over 110 subsidiaries, Bauer operates a worldwide network on all continents.

The operations of the Group are divided into three future-oriented segments with a high potential for synergy: Construction, Equipment and Resources. The Construction segment offers new and innovative specialist foundation engineering services alongside the established ones, and carries out foundation and excavation work, cut-off walls and ground improvements worldwide. Bauer is a world market leader in the Equipment segment and provides a full range of equipment for specialist foundation engineering as well as for the exploration, mining and extraction of natural resources. In the Resources segment, Bauer focuses on highly innovative products and services in the areas of water, environment and natural resources.

Bauer profits greatly from the collaboration between its three separate business divisions, enabling the Group to position itself as an innovative and highly specialized provider of products and services for demanding projects in specialist foundation engineering and related markets. Bauer therefore offers appropriate solutions for the world's major challenges, such as urbanization, growing infrastructure needs, the environment, and water, oil and gas.

The BAUER Group was founded in 1790 and is based in Schrobenhausen, Bavaria. In 2019, it employed some 12,000 people in around 70 countries and achieved total Group revenues of EUR 1.6 billion. BAUER Aktiengesellschaft is listed in the Prime Standard segment of the German stock market.
