Sustainable Sediment Management in Reservoirs

Dams and reservoirs are suffering from increasing siltation as a result of sediment deposition. This poses a threat to drinking water supplies, flood defences and flora and fauna in the downstream reaches and also compromises hydroelectric power generation systems. An efficient and sustainable sediment management regime is therefore urgently needed. The innovative and continuous sediment transport system developed by Hülskens Sediment could well provide a solution to this international problem and the company is continually developing its desedimentation technology and associated equipment.

Storage Reservoir for a Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Alps - Rock Processing under the toughest Conditions

During a comprehensive refurbishment and modernization project the hydroelectric power plant of the Sellrein-Silz power plant expands with a reservoir. The plant technology of rock processing represents only a comparatively small part of the challenging Kühtai project in the Stubai Alps, which is nevertheless of eminent importance as the basis for a permanently successful project implementation.

The first Segment Gasket with CE Marking

Tunnel construction places high demands on the safety and quality of the construction products used. During this demanding environment, Sealable has reached a remarkable milestone as a pioneer: the innovative segment gasket “Rio Lomas” is the first of its kind to receive a CE mark. Although there is no harmonised standard for construction products in this field – a breakthrough for tunnel construction.

The United Nations 2030 Agenda: A Challenge for Mining and for the Monitoring of Mining Activities

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were defined and described by the United Nations in 2015 within the framework of Agenda 2030. Their implementation and consistent pursuit have become more urgent than ever, given the current global climate challenges. Sustainable development is characterised by the equal consideration of economic, ecological, and social aspects. Technically, mining cannot meet the strict definition of sustainability because the Earth´s mineral resources are not replaceable. This paper examines this contradictory situation and puts forward options for action through the scientific monitoring of mining activities. Such monitoring opportunities must be utilised so that mining can ensure a continuing supply of mineral resources for the Earth´s population. In the interest of the “social license to operate”, the mining sector must emphasise its special role in the implementation of the 17 SDGs. Monitoring and mine surveying expertise is needed to plan, implement, verify, and communicate sustainable mining activities throughout the mining life cycle.

Blasthole Drilling Technology: where to next?

Machine development seems to have gone as far as it can in the blasthole drilling sector. This paper presents the state-of-the-art technology as used in underground and surface mining and in the quarrying and tunnelling industries and examines the limits to further development in these areas. Higher energy prices are also having an impact on the type of technology in use and are causing equipment applications to be rescheduled. However, software developments in data gathering (big data), predictive maintenance and automation are continuing apace and this is the area that holds the greatest potential for improvement.
