Students from Freiberg University Mines Rescue and Mine-gas Protection Brigade highly placed at International Event
A team from Freiberg University of Mining and Technology has taken second place at this year’s MERD international mines rescue competition (Mine Emergency Rescue Development), which was held at the Colorado School of Mines in the USA. The theoretical knowledge and practical skills that were required for MERD come from teaching modules provided by the Department for Underground Mining Methodss and by the University’s student-run Mines Rescue Team.

German Exploration Geologist in Search of Battery Metals on the other Side of the World
Konrad Behnke studied geology in Germany with a semester and internship abroad. He left his comfort zone during the corona pandemic – travelling first to Scandinavia. He has been working as an exploration geologist in Australia since April 2022. In an interview with the GeoResources team he recounted his inspiring and uplifting experiences.

Long-term Monitoring of backfilled Salt Mines – a new wireless Rock-pressure Measuring System
Wired rock-pressure measuring systems are not rated as suitable for the long-term monitoring of abandoned salt mines as they are expensive, technically complex and lacking in functional reliability. A ZIM cooperation project was therefore set up to develop, build and successfully test in situ a wireless measuring system designed for long-term measurement applications. The first prototypes are now ready for the instrumentation process.

Optimisation of Salt Production at Heilbronn Mine using a Combination Approach to conventional Mining and mechanical Cutting
Heilbronn mine has been producing rock salt for many years using both conventional mining and mechanical cutting, the two methods being operated independently of each other. With the rearrangement of the production panels the mine has now recently managed to combine the two techniques in such a way that manpower productivity has been improved, average production costs reduced and the mine’s delivery capacity increased, even when customer demand is at a very high level. In these ‘combination districts’ the bottom level of the winning face is excavated using continuous miner technology while the upper layers are then mined by drilling and blasting. This paper describes the background to this new production method together with the challenges arising and the targets that have been set.
