Cimic´s UGL and CPB Contractors awarded early works extension for Copperstring 2032 in Queensland
Cimic Group’s UGL and CPB Contractors have been awarded an early works contract by Powerlink for the CopperString 2032 project in North Queensland. The $20 million early works package will cover detailed engineering design, field surveys, geotechnical surveys and geotechnical works.
This follows a previous Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement awarded to the UGL and CPB Contractors Joint Venture (JV) in 2021 which included scoping, design, site investigations, pricing and progress of the design and construct contract.
The UGL and CPB Contractors JV is the preferred contractor for the delivery phase of the project, which will oversee design, construction and commissioning of seven new substations and a high voltage transmission line between Townsville and Mt Isa. The design and construct contract is expected to be executed later this year and will include an expanded 500 kilovolt transmission line from Townsville to Hughenden, plus associated works.
Cimic Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaria said: “We are pleased to further strengthen our involvement with CopperString and to support the Queensland government to deliver the important infrastructure that will form the Queensland SuperGrid electricity system, and the economic and employment benefits it will bring to communities.
“We recognise the importance of engaging with the local community including traditional owners and look forward to creating opportunities for local people and companies who can contribute to the supply chain for this project.”
UGL Managing Director Doug Moss said: “UGL, and our JV partner and sister company CPB Contractors, have long supported the design and development of the CopperString 2032 project including early works and site field investigations. UGL is a market leader in design, construction, operations and maintenance across the energy sector and we look forward to working with Powerlink to continue the development of CopperString.”
CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said: “The CPB Contractors and UGL joint venture brings together some of the most experienced civil infrastructure, transmission line and substation delivery experts in Australia to provide a reliable foundation for power supply to existing and future industries from Townsville through to Mount Isa. Through CPB Contractors’ industry-leading technical excellence, delivery precision and local-first commitment, this important infrastructure project supports the economic development and sustainability of North Queensland, ensuring ongoing employment, business and community benefits for the region.”
