Leighton Asia was selected by NLEX Corporation in February this year to design and construct the third bridge of the Candaba Viaduct in the north of Manila, Philippines. A groundbreaking ceremony was held to commence its construction in June, with House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales in attendance.
Targeted for completion in November 2024, the project entails the construction of a new five-kilometer bridge in the middle of the two existing viaducts between Pampanga and Bulacan. Once completed, this will increase road capacity of the entire Candaba Viaduct from three lanes without shoulder to three lanes with inner and outer shoulders in each direction. These lanes and shoulders will be wide hence, boosting the safety and convenience of those traversing the viaduct.
“We are pleased to be part of this significant project that will not only improve the safety and convenience of the motorists but also aid in the growth of trade and commerce in Central Luzon,” said Leighton Asia Managing Director Brad Davey. “Our company is keen to leverage our experience on major highway projects in the Philippines and continue providing safe and sustainable solutions in the region on the back of our international expertise and local knowledge.”
Green and sustainable engineering practices will be used in building the Candaba 3rd Viaduct and construction will be compliant with the country’s latest bridge design requirements. It will have piers at every 20 meters, with each pier being supported by two columns and two bored piles which will strengthen the structure amidst the swampy condition of the natural ground underneath the viaduct.
