Britain’s biggest construction project, HS2, is helping the UK’s small business community to thrive. New figures show HS2’s civils contractors doubled their total spend with SMEs – companies with 250 or fewer employees - in 2022/23 when compared to the previous financial year. Sydney Metro West: Tunnelling update
Sydney Metro West: Tunnelling update – Two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have achieved a double breakthrough at Five Dock Station. (Credits: Sydney Metro)
Six tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will carve out the 24-kilometre Sydney Metro West line between Sydney CBD and Westmead. Four TBMs have already started their journey commencing major tunnelling for Sydney Metro West.
TBMs Daphne and Beatrice were launched from The Bays Station site in Rozelle in 2023 and have tunnelled more than 4.3 kilometres towards Sydney Olympic Park. Both TBMs achieved a record-breaking milestone when they broke through the rock wall at Five Dock late last year, claiming the title as the first TBMs in the southern hemisphere to complete a double breakthrough.
Meanwhile, TBMs Betty and Dorothy were launched from the Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility site in the second half of 2023 and are also making their way towards Sydney Olympic Park. All four TBMs are expected to reach Sydney Olympic Park in 2024.
Over at The Bays Station, the site is being prepared for the arrival of the project’s two remaining TBMs that will be launched towards Hunter Street, completing tunnelling for Sydney Metro West in 2026.

BASF and hydroGEOPHYSICS Consulting, partner to enhance secondary copper recovery through novel mining technologies
- BASF and hydroGEOPHYSICS Consulting (HGI) announce a strategic partnership combining chemical, mineral processing, and geophysical expertise for the mining industry.
- As a result of the green electric revolution, global demand for copper is set to exceed supply. Bridging the deficit is a major challenge as ores become more complex and grades decline, meaning building new mines is difficult, costly, and lengthy.
- Heap leach processes offer the industry low-cost extraction techniques; however, they can be relatively inefficient meaning large quantities of valuable copper remain trapped and unrecovered.
- BASF’s chemical LixTRA™ leaching aid combined with HGI’s geophysical deep well injection technologies provide a secondary recovery solution to unlock trapped copper and significantly increase copper extraction rates.
