Flatiron delivering infrastructure improvement projects in North Carolina
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) selected Flatiron for two major infrastructure projects that will improve transportation in the state – a $247 million I-95 widening and rehabilitation project near Lumberton and a $126 million segment of the new Winston-Salem beltway project.
I-95 Widening Project near Lumberton
Focusing on an eight-mile stretch of I-95, the Flatiron team is widening and upgrading the highway to reduce congestion, improve safety and make the infrastructure more resilient to potential flooding. The project adjoins another eight-mile section of I-95 that Flatiron is currently reconstructing.
Scheduled to complete in 2026, this new project will double the width of I-95 to four lanes in each direction near Lumberton, replace two bridges and construct one new bridge.
Winston-Salem Northern Beltway Project
Flatiron has begun work on a project that will extend the eastern section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway 1.5 miles between U.S. 311 and I-40. Flatiron recently completed a contiguous section of the beltway. Scheduled to complete in 2026, this new project includes five new bridges and rehabilitation of three existing bridges.
With the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway, NCDOT is creating a multi-lane freeway that loops around the northern part of the city. Each day, more than 100,000 vehicles and trucks travel through metropolitan Winston-Salem – taxing current roadway infrastructure. The beltway will help alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety.
Strengthening Flatiron Infrastructure Construction Profile
“Flatiron welcomes the opportunity to continue working with NCDOT to deliver these important improvements to North Carolina transportation,” said Jim Schneiderman, Flatiron Senior Vice President for Mid-Atlantic. “Throughout the projects, we will collaborate with the NCDOT and subcontractors to meet project deadlines, maintain cost efficiencies and seek innovative solutions to project challenges.”
These two North Carolina projects are consistent with Flatiron’s strategy to build on successful relationships in local markets. Plus, they reinforce Flatiron’s prominent infrastructure construction presence in North Carolina, adding to:
- Two other I-95 improvement projects with a combined value of $670 million.
- The $59 million U.S. 70 Freeway and Interchanges project.
- The NC 540 A&B projects with combined values exceeding $400 million.
- A recently completed segment of Winston-Salem Northern Beltway valued at $140 million.
- The recently completed Business 40 Reconstruction project valued at $99 million.
In the past six years, Flatiron has been awarded more than $1.8 billion in NCDOT infrastructure work.
