Historic Moment as HS2 launches first giant Tunnelling Machine

  • HS2 launches ‘Florence’ – the first of 10 HS2 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) that will dig 64 miles of tunnel on Phase One of the UK’s new high speed railway
  • This first 170m-long TBM – the largest ever used on a UK rail project – will dig 10 miles of tunnel under the Chilterns, operating 24/7 for the next three years

Advance Record at the Brenner Base Tunnel

The miners in the Brenner Base Tunnel are pushing ahead rapidly with the major rail project. On Wednesday, March 31, 2021, they achieved a new record while excavating the main tubes in South Tyrol: 860 m of tunnel bored and lined in one month.

Die Mineure im Brenner Basistunnel treiben das Eisenbahn-Großprojekt zügig voran. Per Mittwoch, dem 31. März 2021, erreichten sie beim Vortrieb der Hauptröhren in Südtirol eine neue Bestmarke: 860 m gebohrter und ausgebauter Tunnel in einem Monat.

Auf der Baustelle Mauls schreiten die Bauarbeiten zur Errichtung des Brenner Basistunnels (BBT) rasch voran. Der Vortrieb nach Norden in Richtung Brenner erfolgt mit drei Tunnelbohrmaschinen (TBM). Allen voran bricht die Tunnelbohrmaschine Serena mit einem Durchmesser von 6,8 m den Erkundungsstollen aus. In den Haupttunnelröhren fräsen sich die beiden größeren Maschinen, Virginia und Flavia, mit einem Durchmesser von jeweils 10,7 m durch das Gestein.

Malaysian Tunnellers beat the Odds again

On 11 October 2020, the last of the tunnel ring making up the 13.5 km-stretch of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) twin bored tunnels was finally completed. Part of a 52 km alignment known as the Putrajaya line, it is the second extension to the first Kajang line, and also Malaysia’s first metro network meant to connect satellite towns to its capital city, Kuala Lumpur (KL).

A 6.5 km (4 mi) long tunnel for wastewater storage below Louisville, Kentucky, USA has more to it than meets the eye.  “At first glance, this seems like a straightforward project, but it turned out to be much more challenging,” said Shemek Oginski, Project Manager for the contractor, a joint venture of Shea/Traylor. The 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Robbins Main Beam TBM and conveyor system had to cope with overstress in the crown that resulted in significant rock fallout in seven different areas, as well as methane gas in the tunnel. By the machine’s breakthrough on September 22, 2020, the crew had much to celebrate.
