Doka-Power for Mega-Hydropower Station

Increased energy demand in Canada to be met with comprehensive investments into power station expansions. One of the major projects is "Muskrat Falls" with nominal generating capacity of 824 MW electricity from hydraulic energy. With decades of know-how in power station construction Doka will supply the integrated formwork solution for this undertaking.

Canada's infrastructure construction is getting a significant boost in the years ahead. The 70 billion Euro "Building Canada" investment program designed by the government in Ottawa has begun. At the same time several major projects in the energy sector were approved by environmental authorities and will be launched shortly. "Labrador-Island Transmission Link" is a power grid project that commences at the "Muskrat Falls" hydro power station that is currently under construction in Newfoundland and Labrador. From there a 1,135 km transmission cable is expected to transport power to Nova Scotia and into the north-eastern United States. The power generated will replace electricity currently produced by an oil-fired thermal power station.

Astaldi Canada, the building contractor commissioned for the project, selected Doka as its reliable partner for formwork. When awarding the project contract, the builder's primary requirements were precision and zero margin for error. During the selection process Doka's efficient formwork technology, including large-area formwork Top 50, load-bearing tower Staxo 100 and the high-performing dam formwork D22, was very persuasive. The latter is used for construction projects such as dams, barrages and river power stations without form ties. Beyond that Doka, one of the internationally leading in formwork companies headquartered in Austria, managed to score more points with its offer of comprehensive training prior to project start as well as on-site service for the duration of forming work. Doka engineers assemble the required formwork systems on-site, thereby ensuring rapid utilisation and smooth workflow from the very start.

The hydro power station was designed with the most stringent environmental conditions in mind. Thanks to its particularly environmentally sustainable construction it was granted LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The entire construction process will continue over a period of five years, with forming work expected to be completed in two years.
