Salini Impregilo, in consortium with its Austrian partner Strabag, and the client BBT SE – Brenner Base Tunnel/Brenner Basistunnel – signed the agreement to commence works for the construction of the "Isarco River Underpass" of the Brenner Base Tunnel, one of the most challenging lots of the entire project in engineering and financial terms, and worth about €300 million.
The signing of the agreement was attended by Mr. Michele Longo, General Manager of Salini-Impregilo, the top executives of BBT, Mr. Raffaele Zurlo and Prof. Konrad Bergmeister, the project manager Mr. Angelo Lombardi, the operations management team and representatives of Salini-Impregilo and Strabag.
The Isarco River Underpass is the southern lot of the Brenner Base Tunnel, located in the municipality of Prà di Sopra, Bolzano (Italy). This tunnel marks the birth of a future-oriented railway that will cross the Alps at the foot of the mountains without any steep and challenging passes to cross. The Brenner Base Tunnel is the centrepiece of the new Brenner railway line, connecting Munich and Verona. Once completed, its total length of 64 km will make it the world's longest underground railway connection.
The works to build the "Isarco River Underpass" are very challenging in engineering terms: the main tunnels and the interconnecting tunnels will run under the Isarco River, the A22 motorway, state road SS 12 and the old Verona-Brenner railway line. The project will also include the environmental clean-up of the areas affected by the works, which are expected to last 8 years.
The start of these works comes shortly after the start of those of the "Tules-Pfons" lot in Austria (worth €380 million), which sees Salini-Impregilo and Strabag working side by side. The Tules-Pfons section is the cornerstone of the Brenner Base Tunnel and an integral part of the Trans European Networks (TEN).
