Salini Impregilo receives ENR Awards for Sydney and Washington, D.C., Projects Featured

Salini Impregilo has won awards for two projects it has recently completed – the Skytrain Bridge for the Sydney Metro Northwest in Australia and the Anacostia River Tunnel in Washington, D.C., United States. The Group received the recognition from the leading U.S. construction magazine the Engineering News-Record (ENR) which publishes on a yearly basis its rankings for large international construction companies. Salini Impregilo is the only company to have won two awards in the sixth edition of ENR's Global Best Projects.


These two projects, among the 22 selected by the jury, were chosen for their excellence in construction, attention to safety and diversity, and the benefits provided to the respective communities, highlighting the Group's focus on sustainability aimed at improving people's lives.

The Skytrain Bridge, which won the Global Best Project Award for the railway sector, is the most visible part the 36km long AU$8.3 billion Sydney Metro Northwest, the first phase of the Sydney Metro project, which is Australia’s biggest public transport project. The curved, cable-stayed railway bridge is the first of its kind in the country.

The Group’s track record of 7,062 km of railway lines, 472 km of metro lines and 1,587 km of underground works includes some of the most demanding public transport projects for sustainable mobility worldwide, including the Grand Paris Express rail and metro project, Line 3 of Riyadh's metro, Copenhagen's Cityringen and Doha's Red Line North Underground.

The Anacostia River Tunnel project in Washington, D.C., won the Award of Merit in the water/wastewater category in which the Group has been recognized leader since 2013. The Anacostia River Tunnel, part of the Clean Rivers project of DC Water, involved the construction of a 3.8 km hydraulic tunnel, mostly under the Anacostia River, a tributary of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.. The tunnel will transport combined wastewater and rainwater to prevent pollution of the river during periods of heavy rainfall.

The tunnel will transport wastewater and rainwater separately to prevent pollution of the river during floods (combined sewer overflows) that occur during periods of heavy rainfall.

In 2017, the project received the Sustainability Initiative of the Year award from the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES) which promotes the use of underground space for sustainable development.

Salini Impregilo subsequently won the contract for construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, the next tunnel in the Clean Rivers project and the largest component at $580 million.
