Restart of SSAB Special Steels in Oxelösund pushed back until the Beginning of February

During the planned maintenance outage at SSAB Special Steels in Oxelösund in the beginning of December, ABB replaced the control system for the power supply of the rolling mill. During the planned restart, a transformer broke down, as earlier communicated. After repair, during the restart of the powertrain of the rolling mill, there was another breakdown of one out of six similar transformers.

Increasing energy prices continue to apply additional pressure to these industries and so the manufacturers of these systems are developing more efficient control systems such as Odin which has been designed and implemented by RMI Pressure Systems.

Whitehaven Coal’s Narrabri North mine set new production records last year and subsequently ordered a second Cat® EL3000 Longwall Shearer and a second Cat BSLPF6 Stage Loader for delivery in August this year. The mine, located in the Gunnedah Basin of New South Wales, Australia, set a weekly production record of 257,000 tonnes in June and a new quarterly production record in the final quarter of the year. The mine produced a total of 5.659 million tonnes in the year.

At Glencore’s Ravensworth mine, two new Cat® MD6420B Rotary Drills have been cutting their teeth on the overburden of Australian coal for the last 12 months. Their production results are in—with engine hours well above the industry’s “good” rating of 5,000 engine hours per year and even beyond the industry’s “excellent” rating of 6,000 engine hours per year. The first unit, #112 (aka Judy) has achieved a record level 6,876 hours in her first year and #113 (John) has come in at 7,006 hours in his.


Parsons’ Positive Train Control to launch on Metrolink’s San Bernardino Rail Line

Parsons announced that the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has given the Southern California Regional Railroad Authority – the governing board of Metrolink – the green light to implement Positive Train Control (PTC) technology in revenue service demonstration on the San Bernardino rail line. This is the final stage of PTC testing before the FRA will grant similar PTC operations on Metrolink’s other commuter rail lines in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and Ventura counties.
