Robbins Single Shield to repair a Part of World’s Longest Tunnel below the Hudson River in the USA


Robbins has completed the manufacture and testing of a unique tunnel boring machine that will be used to repair the longest continuous tunnel in the world. The TBM will be used to overhaul a section of New York City’s Delaware Aqueduct, a 137 km (85 mi) long tunnel that delivers about 50 percent of the City’s drinking water each day. Over the span of two days in February, representatives from the owner New York Department of Environmental Protection (NYDEP), consultant McMillen Jacobs (MJ), and JV contractor Kiewit-Shea Constructors (KSC) traveled to the Robbins facility in Solon, Ohio to witness the Factory Acceptance Testing of the custom tunnel boring machine.


Herrenknecht: No Run of the Mill Mission on the Florida Coast near Miami

In February 2016 construction company Bessac completed work on a protection tunnel in extremely difficult geology in South Florida. In just ten months and using a customized machine designed especially for the mission, a "Herrenknecht Combined Shield" (HCS, diameter 3.13 m), 1,613 meters were tunnelled adhering to the highest safety standards. A new sewer line was installed in the finished tunnel – after half a century in use the old pipe was simply worn out.

Midtown Tunnel in Virginia opens to One Lane of Traffic six Months ahead of Schedule

Parsons, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation, is pleased to announce that one westbound lane of traffic is now open in the new, 4,300‑ft-long Midtown Tunnel under the Elizabeth River, which connects U.S. Route 58 between Norfolk and Portsmouth, VA. Delhi Metro to build more than 100 cross Passages between Tunnels to ensure Commuters’ Safety


The Delhi Metro has a network of cross passages in their underground sections which connect the two parallel underground tunnels. Two Metro tunnels are generally built parallel to each other for up and down movement of trains and these cross passages allow people to move from one tunnel to the other on foot in case of any emergency like fire or any other unusual occurrence in either of the tunnels. These walkways can be used for carrying out maintenance work also.
